Benefits of Grass-Fed Beef

  Nutritional Benefits Of Grass-Fed Animals

With Grass-fed animals, the nutritional value of their meat is significantly different. Grass-fed beef is lower in calories and has half the saturated fat and 2-5 times more omega-3 fatty acids, which are a type of good fat, than grain-fed beef. It has less omega-6 fatty acids, which are a type of bad fat, than grain-fed beef, as well as high amounts of beta carotene and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) "which may have potent cancer fighting properties" (Robinson, Jo; Why Grass-Fed Is Best; Copyright 2000)

When grazing animals are raised on a primary diet of grass instead of grain, their products are lower in the "bad" fat calories and higher in potentially lifesaving "good" fat calories. When cattle are allowed to remain on pasture, their  meat has about the same amount of fat as wild game or a skinless chicken breast. "When red meat is lean, it actually lowers your cholesterol levels." Jo Robinson, Why GrassFed is Best, 2000, Vashon Island Press.

The animals are less stressed and more healthy. They live their lives on lush pastures and high quality grasses. As in nature, their growth weight is determined by the quality of their food and the richness of their environment. Our livestock are never given hormones or antibiotics, and are never fed any animal by-products. "They eat what nature intended them to eat." Jo Robinson, Why Grassfed is Best, 2000, Vashon Island Press.

A growing number of people want assurance that the farms that create their food are not harming the environment in any way. Raising animals on a pasture alone has a much lighter impact on the environment. When grass is the primary source of nourishment for the ruminant animals, grass farmers use little or no grain. This eliminates the need for genetically modified seeds, as well as pesticides and chemical fertilizers to grow the grain. "Grass farmers are good stewards of the land." Jo Robinson, Why Grassfed is Best, 2000, Vashon Island Press.
